Oil of Hemp Carboy

Hemp oil, or hemp seed oil, is pressed from seeds of varieties of Cannabis that are low in the active principal chemical, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Cold pressed, unrefined hemp oil is clear light green to dark green in color with a nutty flavor. Hemp oil is not to be confused with resins extracted from the flowers and leaves of these low THC Cannabis varieties. This nutritional seed oil is highly unsaturated and has an ideal 3:1 ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 essential fatty acids. Refined hemp seed oil is used in body care products, soaps, shampoos and detergents. Industrial hemp seed oil is used in a wide range of products including lubricants, fuels, and plastics. Hemp seed oil was used in a variety of folk remedies, and provided our ancestors with a good source of cannabidiol (CBD), a non-intoxicating extract. Cannabidiol is quickly being recognized as a treatment for a wide variety of human conditions that are now being grouped as Cannabinoid Deficiency Diseases. Hemp oil, considered a "drying oil," oxidizes upon exposure to air and polymerizes into a solid form. These polymer-forming properties make it an excellent varnish for wood, creating a finish similar to tung oil. For centuries, hemp seed oil has been recognized as a binding agent for the pigments used in oil painting just as hemp canvas was the preferred painting media. The gold-leafed banner is hand shaded and detailed. The tall 1 1/2" gold leaf letters are painted over with asphaltum. Carboys are large bottles used for storing of liquids. This one would have been used to dispense hemp seed oil into smaller containers. The capacity of this carboy is almost five gallons. The American made flint glass jar, including the stopper, is 18 1/4" tall. The shoulder width is 7 1/2" that tapers down to a 7" base. The mouth blown bottle has a 2 1/4" outside diameter tincture neck and a pontil scar of a corresponding size, which suggests the blowpipe was also used as the pontil rod. The glass has several seed marks, ranging from 1/8" to 5/8" in length, and a uniform raised base. The polished, flat top stopper is also mouth blown, measuring 3" tall and 2 3/4" in diameter that terminates in a 1 1/4" sheared rod.
